The artistic practice of Maartje Korstanje (°1982, Goes, Netherlands) is driven by processes of beauty and transience in nature and the influence of humans on it. Her attention focuses on the dynamics between growth and decay, both in natural environments and in man-made situations, but mainly where these converge, collide, or merge. This creates a force field in which construction and deconstruction, attraction and repulsion play a major role. Although current and universal issues serve as catalysts for the work, many decisions are guided less by reason and more by intuition and imagination. The choice of materials and their treatment are of vital importance in her practice, and despite the use of various materials, from ceramics to embroidery, cardboard remains a constant basis for the ongoing exploration of new possibilities.
Maartje Korstanje studied at the Academy of Art and Design / St. Joost, Breda, and the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam (MFA). She was one of the winners of the Prix de Rome in 2007 and participated in residency programs at the European Ceramic Work Centre, CARF in India, and ISCP in New York, among others. In 2014, she was nominated for the Volkskrant Visual Arts Prize. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Museum de Pont, Marc Straus Gallery, New York, and Gyeonggi Museum, Korea, among others. She has had solo exhibitions at Upstream Gallery, Vleeshal, Zeeuws Museum, mariondecanniere Antwerp, Museum Jan Cunen, Stedelijk Museum Kampen and the Groninger Museum, among others.

De kunstenaarspraktijk van Maartje Korstanje (°1982, Goes, Nederland) wordt gedreven door processen van schoonheid en vergankelijkheid in de natuur en de invloed van de mens daarop. Haar aandacht richt zich op de dynamiek tussen groei en verval, zowel in natuurlijke omgevingen, als in de door mensen gecreëerde situaties maar voornamelijk waar deze samenkomen, botsen of versmelten. Dan ontstaat een krachtenveld waarin constructie en deconstructie, aantrekking en afstoting een hoofdrol spelen. Hoewel actuele en universele kwesties dienen als katalysatoren voor het werk, worden veel beslissingen minder door de ratio gestuurd en eerder door intuïtie en verbeelding. Materiaalkeuze en de behandeling ervan zijn van vitaal belang in haar praktijk en ondanks het gebruik van diverse materialen, van keramiek tot borduurwerk, blijft karton een constante basis voor voortdurende verkenning van nieuwe mogelijkheden.
Maartje Korstanje (Goes 1982) studeerde aan de Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving / St. Joost, Breda en het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam (MFA).
